Bob Schoen and seven others from Florida Bath & Surfaces, Inc. created kitchen and bathroom countertops on the fly for the new home during a late-February taping of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." Usually, Schoen said it takes about a week and a half to create a template for countertops and fabricate them. This time, they created the tops off of designer renderings, installed them from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. one morning and adjusted imperfections in the field. "It was definitely a little more difficult," Schoen said. "But there was total cooperation." Schoen said usually if trades have to work "on top of each other" in a home being built, people can get "ornery." "That wasn't the case here," Schoen said. "We had 50 to 60 people in the house at once and everyone was pitching in. We knew it was a good thing." The Cambria quartz kitchen countertops and LivingStone bathroom countertops would have normally cost about $12,000. The companies donated their material for this build, though, and Schoen and his crew donated their time. "When we told the company and our folks about it, there was nothing but excitement," Schoen said. Sadly, the father of the group, George Kadis, passed away from brain cancer since the taping of the show. "He knew his family would be taken care of," Schoen said. "He knew they'd have a home." The "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" episode featuring the Kadis family and Florida Bath & Surfaces aired on ABC April 12, 2009.
